An island haven for ocean-going yachts and boats...
The Gaeltacht Island of Oileán
Chléire (Cape Clear) defies the
Atlantic Ocean, near Roaring
water Bay, off the tip of South-
West Cork. An eight-mile
ferryboat trip from Dún na
Séad (Baltimore) past Sherkin
Island and its internationaly
known marine research
station, brings the visitor to
this awesome ocean outpost.
This high, rocky island is the
birthplace of St Ciarán of the
sixth century and whose holy
well and church can still be
visited. As well as being a
keeper of the treasures of the
Irish language and Irish music,
Cape Clear fascinates lovers of
wild life. Kittiwakes, puffins,
cormorants, gulls and a host of
other native and rare species
can be observed from the
Cape. This unique Atlantic
island is also a safe haven for
ocean-going yachts and boats
as well as commercial
fishermen.
